The American Open is USA Weightlifting’s largest national competition. This year’s meet, held outside of  a frigid Dallas, Texas,  is expected to have over 424 competitors; 212 women and 212 men among the eight male divisions and seven female divisions.

American Open Weight Class Distribution Pie Chart

Weight-classes have been divided-up based on total into A, B, C, and D sessions with approximately 10-15 lifters per session. Due to the large turnout and a 3 day constraint, multiple sessions will be taking place over the next few days, with as many as three sessions going at one time. Jay is at the meet and will be helping in various coaching capacities for East Coast Gold.  All lifts count as finial attempts and can earn the lifter a place on the podium.

Competition

During competition, the snatch event takes place first, followed by a short break, and then the clean and jerk event.  The barbell is loaded incrementally and progresses to a heavier weight throughout the course of competition. Therefore, the lifting order is up to the lifters—the competitor who chooses to attempt the lowest weight goes first.  If they are unsuccessful at that weight, they have the option of reattempting at that weight within 2 minutes or trying a heavier weight after any other competitors have made attempts at the previous weight or any other intermediate weights.  Weights are set in 1 kilogram increments. When a tie occurs, the athlete with the lower body-weight is declared the winner.

Awards

Medals will be awarded top 3 in each weight class for snatch, clean & jerk, and total.  There will also be a “Best Lifter” award for the top male and female lifter based on Sinclair Formula. In addition to the individual awards, three team awards will be issued for both men and women. Team points are based on a team members total only. 1st=12 points, 2nd=9, 3rd=8, 4th=7, 5th=6, 6th=5, 7th=4, 8th=3, 9th=2, 10th=1
